Mycenae is  Μυκῆναι  in Greek which is pronounced and spelled as MYKINES. When we tried to ask around about bus trips to Mycenae we had a tough time being understood, as people thought we wanted to go to Messinia which is many miles away, completely, at the other end of the peninsula.

In the summer, the bus to MIKINES leaves from the central bus stop in Nafplion, near the base of the fort at 10am, 12pm, and 2pm and returns at 11am, 1pm and 3pm. The trip is 30 kilometers and takes about 45 minutes to an hour, as it stops along the way.

We took the 10 o'clock bus and returned on the 1 o'clock bus giving us about 2 hours to explore the site, which was enough time to see the whole site and a quick look at the museum. We thought that waiting for the 3pm bus would have been too much time.

We did miss seeing the Treasury of Atreus as it is away from the main site. This would have meant catching the next bus.

Treasury of Atreus (Point of Interest)

We did not make it to the Treasury of Atreus, also known as the tomb of Agamemnon, because it is quite a way from the bus site. If you caught the 3pm bus instead of the 1pm bus, you would have time to walk down here.

They say it is not to be missed.

Underground Cistern (Point of Interest)

This deep tunnel on the inside of the citadel walls actually provides access to a spring which is on the outside of the wall.

There are several steps down to a dad end at the bottom of the cistern.

You must have a flashlight to see your way down the stairs.
