The island is the rim of a huge volcanic caldera.
One Atlantian theory is that it was the eruption of this volcano that's destroyed Atlantis.
It is too deep to anchor securely except in the unfinished marina on the south of the island.

Oia (Mooring)
There are some mooring balls just off Oia on the northwest corner of Santorini, but they were either too close to the land for our boat (14.8 meters) or they were reserved. We ended up leaving Santorini without even setting foot on the island because we couldn't find a place to leave the boat. We were disappointed, but we sailed up to Folegandros instead and enjoyed it immensely.
