We sailed the Abacos for one month. The best sailing grounds. Clean water, moderate waves, good wind, plain fun. Best guide to use I found is Guide to Abaco, Bahamas, Steve Dodge. Part of my book A Family Of Six At Sea, crossing the Atlantic on a cement boat, also describes the Bahamas.

Beautiful beach. Good snorkling on the reef.

The old lighthouse is worth a visit. One of the last kerosene operated lights.

Green Turtle Cay

We spent about 10 days here and throughly enjoyed our time there. Stayed first 3 nights at The Other Shore Club and Marina but moved over to Leeward Marina which was much nicer for about the same price. This was in Black Sound which is a bit difficult to enter with a shallow approach. We only draw about 3 1/2' but had to stay in the middle of the channel to avoid shallows. The town of New Plymouth is charming and although a bit pricey, you can get most anything you need there. Very nice beach on the East side of the Island. We did dinghy up to White Sound to the Turtle Cay Marnia which is quite nice and would recommend it as well but a long way to town. Plenty of mooring in Black Sound and a lot of boats anchored West of New Plymouth - probably not able to make the shallow channel into the sound.
