Sicily

Sicily is a great place for your next sailing vacation.  The primary destinations are the Aeolian and Aegadian Islands. The aegadian islands are composed of three small islands and are famous for their large marine reserve and once prosperous tuna fisheries.  The Aeolian islands are further apart from one another, are larger, and are most famous for the active volcano of Stromboli.

Sardinia

Sardinia Luxury Tax Repealed

According to the Triton the Sardinia luxury tax that cost visiting yachts up to 15,000 euros to dock has been repealed.

"Local authorities in Sardinia voted yesterday to cancel the tax, which was opposed by several tourism groups on the Italian island. The number of yachts visiting Sardinian ports since the tax went into effect in 2006 has dropped by 50 percent, according to the Consortium of Sardinian Tourist Ports.

“This is a very significant step forward for everyone who works in the yachting and luxury sector in Sardinia,” said Fulvio Luise, managing Partner of Luise Group, who shared the news with The Triton from Italy today. “Despite our best efforts in the past three years to help clients understand this tax, we faced enormous challenges and incurred a drop of approximately 20-25 percent each year in superyachts traveling to Sardinia.”

According to noonsite.com, the controversial yacht tax introduced in Sardinia in 2006 has been ruled illegal by the Italian court and rates have been reduced in time for the 2008 summer season.

The tax applies to all private yachts over 14 m LOA that visit the island between June 1st and September 30th, and sailing yachts pay only 50% of these fees. The new rates are roughly as follows:

LENGTH       MOTOR        SAIL
14-16m          €120              €60   per week
16-20m          €500            €250   per week
20-24m          €750            €375   per week
34-30m        €1250            €625   per week
30-60m        €2500          €1250   per week
>60m            €3750          €1875  per week
Yachts under 14m LOA are exempt.

The tax applies per week for the first 5 weeks after which no more no tax is due.

Payments are made at the local post office within 24 hours of arrival or via online payment on the Regione Sardinia website.

Here is a Google translated version of the official page.

The rates used to be €1000 for motor yachts 14-16 meters to €15,000 for motor yachts longer than 60 m LOA.
See noonsite.com  for further information.
