This is supposedly the home and kingdom of Odysseus that took him 10 years to get back to after the Trojan War,  the subject of Homer's Odyssey.

Polis (Anchorage)

A lovely anchorage with a small fishing harbour. There is a taverna on the shore.

We met a lovely young greek couple from Patras that that were camping on the shore near Loizos cave.

They not only shared their freshly caught fish with us, but the next morning at 0600 they met us at the harbour and taught us how to catch the fish using very light handlines and tiny hooks baited with doughy mixture of bread, flour, and sardines.

Cave of the Nymphs (Point of Interest)

The cave, also known as Loizos cave, has actually collapsed, but this is where Odysseus was meant to have hidden his treasure on his return to Ithaca.

Where we docked the dinghy (Dockage)

We dinghied in to the dock and tied up on the outside near the root of the mole, and went for a drink at the bar.

A funny story

When we returned to the dinghy, we were horrified to see that the outboard fuel tank was gone.

We paced up and down the dock and along the waterfront, looking accusingly at possible fuel tank thieves. We even reported the problem to a coast guard gentleman that happened to be in the port. He told us all we could do was get a taxi to Vathi and report the loss.

We then rowed all the way back to the boat, and lo and behold, sitting on the side deck was our fuel tank that we had forgotten to put in the boat and hook up to the motor. We had somehow motored all the way ashore on the fumes in the carburetor.

We felt very bad about having thought ill of the locals. During our entire trip though Greece we never heard about anyone having anything stolen.

It seemed to us that the local people throughout Greece are extremely honest and would have no need or inclination to pilfer anything.

Grumpy Farmer Bay (Anchorage)

Better known as Aghios Nicolas. A nice anchorage, but if you go ashore be careful where you walk, as the local farmer can be a bit grumpy.

We anchored here for lunch and a swim. Some other cruisers went ashore and were yelled at in Greek when they got too close to the farm.

Ormos Limenia (Anchorage)

We anchored here with Concerto and took long lines ashore to the trees.

Dinghy to Frikes for good restaurants and shops.

Ag Ilias (Anchorage)

A beautiful little bay that gave us good protection, close in. There is a small chapel on the point.

The beach was mostly nude.

A walk up the hill (Hike)

We took a very pleasant, leisurely walk over to the chapel and up the hill

A Bus tour of Ithaca Island (Excursion)

A group of us caught the local bus that took us all around the island to Kioni, where we stopped for a fine lunch.

We then caught the bus back to Ithaca.

This is a highly recommended and inexpensive excursion.
