One of my favorite islands in the Cyclades.

In mid season, Ios has a reputation as a party capital of the islands, full of young naked revelers, but in September it was reasonably quiet and pleasant.

Port Ios

Chora (Excursion)

Port Ios harbour (Town Dock)

Nice dock with good restaurants.

Beware a very large mooring chain across the port about 30 meters from the dock. I caught one of the flukes of my bruce anchor in one of the large links. To get free, I hauled the anchor chain tight and dropped a big loop of rope down my vertical chain and over the anchor. I was then able to slack my chain and, with the loop of rope, pull the anchor fluke out of the mooring chain using a mask and snorkle on the surface to see which way to go.

Valmas Beach (Beach)

This is a beautiful little cove with a taverna, just a short walk from the port on the footpath around the headland past the chapel.

There are two wells on the beach.

Nude bathers on the beach and the rocks.

Footpath to town

Valma's Taverna (Restaurant)

The taverna has been run by the same family for many years.

Before the road was recently built, supplies were brought in my mule.

The elderly proprietress serves good food and fine retsina and makes one feel very welcome.

Ormos Manganari (Anchorage)

I anchored here for a couple of days in a blow.

I tried to leave on the second day, but broke a block on my storm jib in 35 knots of wind, so hightailed it back to the anchorage to try again another day.

Good holding in choppy conditions.
